Chapter 2: I’m Hungry… Obediently Lying in Her Arms, Not at All…
When Meng Huan heard the young servant delivering food at noon, he stood by the window and shouted that he wanted to see Wen Zhaoyin. After pestering for two days in a row, he still couldn’t get anyone to come.
Eating a single type of food for a long time can lead to a lack of other essential nutrients. He felt that he was lacking in everything, and his blood pressure was so low that it was even difficult to stand up.
Now, after starving for four consecutive days, he really didn’t even have the strength to shout. Could it be that he had transmigrated here just to be secretly killed by a treacherous servant?
“Madam, please come in.”
“Where is Wang Fu? Quickly go and have him bring the key to open the door.”
Meng Huan weakly raised his head. At first, he thought he was hallucinating, but after regaining clarity, he realized there were indeed people talking outside.
He arduously got out of the quilt and, supporting himself on the edge of the bed, slowly moved outward, wanting to get down and see the situation. His turning point had finally come. If he couldn’t seize it this time, he would really die.
Outside the door.
Wen Zhaoyin quietly waited for Wang Fu to come and open the door, feeling that something was slightly off in her heart. The guard she had arranged at the entrance of the courtyard was not there, and the attending servant was also absent.
A few days ago, she had gotten a little crazy after getting drunk and had been rough with Meng Huan, even forcing him. The next day, when she sobered up in the study, she felt bad about it and wanted to come see him at that time. However, due to official duties that needed to be handled, it was delayed until today.
It was also embarrassing to say, but she was usually very able to control herself. Before meeting him, there were almost no instances of her losing her rationality. Perhaps it was because he looked too much like that person…
Wang Fu arrived slowly, his expression not revealing anything amiss. Wen Zhaoyin didn’t ask him about the courtyard matter and used her eyes to signal him to open the door.
Wang Fu took out a bunch of keys. When opening the door, his hands were trembling, and he tried the wrong key twice before unlocking it.
He had originally thought that the madam had tormented Meng Huan so badly four days ago because she didn’t treat him as a person at all, only as a plaything. If she truly cared, she wouldn’t have been so unaware of the severity.
Thinking of the many official documents that had been sent in the morning, he had guessed that the madam would not come to the courtyard for the next few days. So he had felt very reassured in using a bit of his authority to deal with Meng Huan.
He didn’t really intend to starve Meng Huan to death. He only wanted to have him apologize after a couple of days and kowtow a few times to settle the matter. At that time, he would threaten him a bit, and Meng Huan probably wouldn’t dare to say anything.
But who would have thought that despite all precautions, the madam would come at this time!
“You… please come in…”
Wen Zhaoyin glanced at him. Her gaze was as calm as water, but it made Wang Fu feel chilled to the bone.
He was so nervous that his mouth and tongue felt dry. He thought that if Meng Huan complained first, there would be no good outcome. He turned around and quietly withdrew to find someone for help.
On this side, as soon as Wen Zhaoyin entered the door, she saw Meng Huan wearing a robe and trying to get out of bed. When he raised his head, his eyes met hers. For some reason, he lost his balance and fell to the floor.
It’s over, it’s over. That night must have scared him.
She once again reproached herself, then quickly walked over to help him up. She didn’t mind the dirt and raised her hand to gently brush off the dust from his body.
Today, Meng Huan seemed much more obedient than before. Not only did he not scold her, but after being helped up, he also obediently lay in her arms, without any of the previous rejection.
Looking at this face, coupled with his obedience, Wen Zhaoyin’s heart almost melted into water. Her guilt for what she had done four days ago grew even stronger.
“Did you get hurt from the fall? Are you injured anywhere?”
She was originally a talented and romantic woman. Now at the prime of her life, with both talent and beauty, and a smooth official career, if outsiders saw her lowering her head and asking such questions, even the threshold of the Wen family’s door, which was a foot high, would be flattened by men wanting to become her concubine.
However, the person hearing these words did not indulge in it. Instead, he blinked his eyes and said in a low voice, “I’m hungry…”
——
Main courtyard, east wing.
“Eat slower.”
Wen Zhaoyin saw that he was eating urgently and didn’t even listen to her reminder. She directly took away the porridge bowl.
“The doctor just said that you can’t binge eat now. You need to eat less but more frequently. Eating this fast will make you throw up.”

“I know she doesn’t love him.” (Female-dominant)
I’ve read this novel twice already. Sis, I’m highly recommending it to you!
The female lead? Not a good person.
The second male lead? Not a good person.
The male lead? Willingly plays the third party, breaking up the female and second male lead’s relationship despite all the warnings from his friends—so yeah, he’s definitely not a good person either.
Basically, nobody in this novel is simple-minded or without scheming.
The female lead starts off as the male lead’s secretary, but don’t worry—later on, she takes over the company while the male lead steps back to support her. He won’t steal her spotlight, overshadow her, or dull her shine.
I love novels where men are out here snatching wigs, tearing each other down, and going to war just to win the female lead’s affection. And this is exactly that kind of novel. Most of Hai Dai Ran’s works have this dynamic. You’ll see the male characters’ emotions being pushed to the absolute extreme.
There’s even a scene where the second male lead exposes the male lead online for being a homewrecker. The brotherhood immediately gangs up on him, dragging him through the mud. I find it compelling —it completely flips reality on its head, where usually, women are the ones fighting over a man and getting torn apart by the sisterhood.
For me, female leads in the novels I read should only struggle in their careers, not in love. But if the brainless romantics in the story are all men? I have zero complaints.
I’ve pretty much read all of Hai Dai Ran’s novels and even translated all of them—her works are just my thing. I’ll slowly upload everything here. One day, when my website is official, I hope I can invite her to join as one of the star authors.
