Chapter 39: Two Short Black Hairs on the Dress
The person who arrived was none other than someone Wang Zhao knew.
Li Zhenwei stood behind the glass door wearing a crisp suit, with an ambiguous expression on her face. She shifted her gaze slightly to glance at the man beneath Wang Zhao, seeming to ponder for a moment before nodding in realization.
It was as if she had just remembered such a person, with an extremely dismissive attitude. In fact, these elite children seemed to have a unique talent for such expressions, always able to make people feel that detestable contempt.
Under the gazes of Wang Zhao and Chen Fangli, the woman casually said: “Oh, I know you, Chen Fangli, or should I add a prefix – my sister-in-law’s ex-boyfriend?”
This statement was quite sarcastic. Wang Zhao could hear the displeasure hidden beneath Li Zhenwei’s calm exterior, not just towards Chen Fangli, but towards her as well.
Was it for her infidelity? Or did she think that still being entangled with an ex-boyfriend on the wedding day was disrespectful to Li Zhenguan?
As for Li Zhenwei knowing about Chen Fangli, Wang Zhao was actually a bit surprised. But thinking carefully, it was understandable. Over a month ago, when they heard about Li Zhenguan’s pregnancy, given the Li family’s background, it was impossible for them not to have sent someone to investigate her background.
Perhaps the Li family now knew more about her experiences from childhood to adulthood than Wang Zhao herself did.
Thinking of this, Wang Zhao gave a bitter smile and reached out a hand to pry open Chen Fangli’s grip on her.
Perhaps because her strength was much greater than in her previous life, she managed to break free so easily. She stepped back, adjusted the hem of her clothes, smoothed out the wrinkles on her dress, and then looked back at Li Zhenwei standing by the glass door.
Wang Zhao’s expression remained unchanged, even appearing calm. She smiled gently and said, “Sister, why did you come over here?”
There was no panic or fluster at being seen embracing another man by her husband’s sister.
Li Zhenwei glanced at her, the displeasure in her eyes unconcealed: “Xu Yingchun and the others went to the room to look for you, found you weren’t there, and couldn’t reach you by phone. They got a bit worried and asked someone to contact me.”
“Is that so?” Wang Zhao instinctively wanted to touch her pocket, but realized she was wearing a dress. Her brows furrowed slightly as she smiled and explained, “I must have left my phone in the room. I forgot to bring it when I went out.”
Li Zhenwei’s gaze swept over Wang Zhao’s face, her tone indescribably calm: “Wang Zhao, the wedding banquet has already started. Zhenguan is waiting for you at the front to toast together. You should go back now. Xu Yingchun and the others are all waiting for you alone.”
This statement was not very polite. Her temper was also rising a bit, mainly because dealing with Chen Fangli was already enough to annoy her, and Li Zhenwei’s attitude of catching an adulterer was really infuriating.
She turned her head to look at Chen Fangli: “You go first.” In some ways, she was also afraid that Li Zhenwei might do something to Chen Fangli.
Chen Fangli glanced at the woman by the glass door. Li Zhenwei now took out a cigarette from her pocket with a fake smile, lit it with a click of her lighter, turned her body slightly, and leaned against the wall to take a puff.
He wanted to say something more, but considering Li Zhenwei’s presence, he really didn’t know how to open his mouth. His eyelashes trembled for a moment, his fingers curled under his suit sleeve, but he still prepared to leave, not wanting to put Wang Zhao in a difficult position.
As he walked past Li Zhenwei, the woman suddenly sneered, her usually cold face showing some unusual expression, though her eyes remained extremely indifferent.
“Mr. Chen, you’re lucky you’re a man. I’m a woman, and I don’t hit men in my life, otherwise I would have punched you just now,” Li Zhenwei said, exhaling a puff of smoke. “Since you’ve already broken up, and Mr. Chen has plans to develop in Jiangcheng, some hands shouldn’t be reaching out, and some thoughts shouldn’t exist.”
Earlier when Zhenguan asked her to investigate Chen Fangli, she thought Zhenguan was overthinking again, his temper acting up. Who would have thought there was actually something to it.
Chen Fangli.
She thought of the file she had just sent to Zhenguan yesterday. Because the time was too tight and she didn’t pay much attention, when she had people investigate Chen Fangli, they didn’t dig too deep, only roughly focusing on the couple’s relationship during university. After graduation, she didn’t care much about it. It seems she needs to have someone investigate Chen Fangli’s situation abroad in recent years.
Thinking carefully, this person’s return to the country was too sudden.
Li Zhenwei had a habit similar to Wang Zhao’s – what could be done today would never be put off until tomorrow. This was probably a characteristic of people who consider things thoroughly, or perhaps because of this characteristic, Li Zhenwei often stayed at the company due to overtime work.
She decided to have someone investigate Chen Fangli thoroughly when she got back, preferably looking into his experiences over the past few years.
When she first heard about Wang Zhao’s ex-boyfriend, she was quite indifferent. A relationship from university days, followed by a long-distance relationship after graduation – no matter how deep the feelings were, they should have faded by now.
Most of these long-distance relationships end because of different future development directions. Based on her understanding of Wang Zhao, since this woman had already decided to break up, it meant the relationship between these two had ended. But now it seems, the end of this relationship might not have been so clear-cut.
This feeling of losing control wasn’t good.
Li Zhenguan was, after all, her only brother. Although they didn’t spend much time together, blood ties and kinship were there. Li Zhenwei couldn’t possibly watch Li Zhenguan’s hard-won marriage be ruined by an outsider. In this aspect, her personality was quite similar to Li Zhenguan’s.
At certain moments, they wouldn’t mind using special methods to solve some troubles. This might be the inherited ruthlessness of the Li family.
Chen Fangli, who was originally preparing to leave, stopped in his tracks when he heard these words. He couldn’t help but look at the woman beside him – Li Zhenguan’s elder sister. He carefully examined her face. Although they weren’t born from the same mother, Chen Fangli believed there must be some similarities in the eyebrows and eyes of these siblings.
He recalled the groom he had seen sitting below earlier and suddenly realized where the similarities between these two people lay. Li Zhenwei’s eyes and eyebrows were very similar to Li Zhenguan’s, possibly inherited from one of their parents.
