Chapter 57 Abandonment
She seemed to have had a dream.
In the dream, she grew up in an era that was historically a matriarchal society. In this world, men gave birth, and there was equality between women and men, but it still seemed to be under a certain gloom.
The six-year-old her was influenced by her own cognition from her previous life, believing that only females had the reproductive function. Perhaps it was because she had become smaller, and her thoughts were also affected, carrying the stubbornness and obstinacy unique to children.
Then, Wang Zhao was sent to one psychological clinic and hospital after another, places she didn’t quite like. Wang Xuechun and Zhang Ke believed that she had a gender identity disorder, and some doctors also thought so.
A year later, it was Wang Zhao who compromised first. During this period, Wang Xuechun showed her many picture books about the physiological differences between men and women, just to reverse her erroneous gender perception.
This was the beginning of Wang Zhao’s dream, but later it seemed to be the end of this dream.
Opening her eyes again, she saw the familiar ceiling once more. For a moment, she seemed to think that she had really just had a dream, or it seemed like she had returned to a year ago. She was also lying on such a clean bed, looking at the snow-white ceiling, welcoming unfamiliar parents, unfamiliar friends, and unfamiliar relatives.
The familiar headache.
For a moment, Wang Zhao suspected that she had returned to a year ago. It seemed that every time she woke up, she had to accept a tremendous change.
And it was the same now.
Unfamiliar yet familiar scenes fluttered in her mind, like colorful butterflies. When Wang Zhao moved her body, it felt like it was falling apart, and the needle-like pain made it impossible for her to make the proper movements.
Before she could turn her head, the person beside her suddenly spoke, “Wang Zhao, you’re awake?”
Wang Zhao turned her head slightly.
Li Zhenguan was lying beside her bed, looking like he had been sitting there for a long time. There was a red mark on one side of his face, and his eyes were slightly red, as if he had been crying.
Wang Zhao withdrew her gaze, closed her eyes for a moment, and instead asked, “Where are Mom and Dad?”
Li Zhenguan’s gaze fell on the woman’s face, and his heart sank a little, but he still managed to smile slightly, “Mom and Dad came over for a while. Mom has a meeting at the school this afternoon with important leaders, so after seeing that you were okay, she went back to the school first. Dad went home to pack some clothes and will come back later. You need someone to take care of you here.”
Wang Zhao made a sound of acknowledgment and closed her eyes without saying anything more.
She felt that her headache was acting up again, and thinking about the man beside her bed made her head hurt even more. The car accident a year ago had messed up everything, causing her to lose some of her memories and making an already chaotic situation even more chaotic.
In just half a year, her life had undergone earth-shattering changes due to that car accident.
Li Zhenguan sat beside her, not leaving, just looking at the woman on the bed like this. Since she woke up, she hadn’t looked him straight in the eye.
He didn’t move or make a sound, just stubbornly sitting there, seemingly waiting for Wang Zhao to say something.
After a few minutes of silence, Wang Zhao said with her eyes closed, “You should go back first. There’s no need to wait here.”
Li Zhenguan didn’t move.
Both of them were clear about each other’s attitude and what it was for. From the moment Wang Zhao opened her eyes, Li Zhenguan knew that some things had returned to their original state.
The two of them were at a stalemate like this. On one hand, Wang Zhao’s body was not feeling well, and she didn’t have the energy to deal with this matter. On the other hand, she didn’t know how to face Li Zhenguan. The arguments from a year ago and the interactions over the past year were like two mirrors, making her head buzz with a slight concussion.
In the end, Li Zhenguan still went home first. Zhang Ke came over around dusk, bringing some luggage and daily necessities. This was a single room, and he bought a simple bed, preparing to stay here to accompany her.
Apart from the concussion, Wang Zhao actually had some burns on her arm. She had fallen on the ground before and accidentally got gasoline on her, causing a large area of her arm to be burned. It was estimated that it would leave a scar.
Zhang Ke was a little worried, “Your head has been injured several times this year. I don’t know if it will leave any hidden ailments.”
Who would have thought that being a civil servant in this era would be so unsafe? Zhang Ke’s heart almost jumped out when he received the call from Li Zhenguan before.
Wang Zhao smiled and said she was fine.
Zhang Ke threw the warm towel into the water basin beside him and looked at the person on the bed, saying, “Zhenguan didn’t sleep all night. Yesterday, when he received your call, he was so scared that he almost died. He immediately took a taxi from home and rushed over. You didn’t know when you were in the operating room, but he didn’t dare to cry outside, afraid that it would really bring bad luck. He didn’t close his eyes all day today, just waiting for you to wake up.”
Wang Zhao remained silent.
Zhang Ke had also noticed something, so he said these words. Sometimes he didn’t know what to say about this daughter of his. He just thought that the two of them had a little conflict, so he didn’t take it to heart. He casually mentioned Zhenguan’s hardship and told Wang Zhao to keep it in mind.
When Li Zhenguan came the next day, he seemed to have tidied up and no longer looked as disheveled as the day before.
In the morning, some people came to the ward, mainly from the unit to visit. After all, her injury this time was considered a work-related injury. So Wang Zhao took the opportunity to ask if there was anything from the prosecutor’s side. The situation was too urgent at that time, and she didn’t have time to care about other things.
“It’s nothing. Chunhua just had some burns on her body. Fortunately, you pushed that person down in time, otherwise Chunhua would have been seriously injured.” The leader of the department said, and then praised Wang Zhao.
Many people from their unit came, and the leaders also came to visit. So the ward was surrounded by a large group of people, but a few minutes later, some of them were driven out by the nurses and doctors.
After dealing with these people, Wang Zhao felt that her head was even dizzier. Rubbing the spot between her eyebrows, she lay on the hospital bed and somehow thought of Li Zhenguan.
People really shouldn’t indulge themselves. A person who is restrained and courteous can bring endless consequences with a single act of impoliteness.
