Chapter 8: Assassination “But your reason for saving someone is not sufficient, you just…”
When Gu Sui entered Yongning Palace empty-handed, he came out carrying a pile of things.
Two palace attendants carried an exquisite box behind him, filled with treasures bestowed by the Empress Dowager.
However, the most eye-catching was the small white cat in Gu Sui’s arms.
Gu Sui’s face was now filled with shock and indignation, while also finding it somewhat laughable.
Did he look easy to fool?
He wouldn’t have believed the empty promises of Yongning Palace ten years ago.
What nonsense about ‘Entering the harem to serve the emperor is every young man’s dream.’
‘From now on, you’ll be the person Huan’er relies on most.’
‘Your children will also be Huan’er’s most beloved.’
‘…’
It’s all bullshit!
How old did that little emperor look? How dare the Empress Dowager think such things.
Finding it absurd, Gu Sui shook his head and quickened his pace.
He didn’t want to stay in this palace for even half a minute longer.
The white cat in his arms meowed, and he looked down, meeting the cat’s pure blue eyes.
The Empress Dowager gave him the cat as a reward, but the implication was clear.
She just wanted him to be a pet in the palace, controlled by the royal family, so his mother would also be restrained.
Gu Sui just laughed inwardly.
However, Gu Sui’s eyes flickered, considering.
Perhaps he could take advantage of the Empress Dowager’s sordid intentions.
What did mother say before?
There were two places he couldn’t enter – one was the palace, and the other was the Regent’s mansion.
But if he had to choose one?
Gu Sui felt this matter was still negotiable.
“Meow–”
A soft cry came from his arms. Gu Sui pursed his lips and looked at the cat, his eyes showing hesitation.
Although the Empress Dowager had ill intentions, the cat was innocent.
When it looked at him with those clear eyes, Gu Sui’s heart melted.
He had wanted to raise a cat with Mu Jiulu long ago, but because they had no time to take care of it, and it was too expensive, they had to give up.
He couldn’t just throw away a gift from the palace. Since that was the case, he might as well raise it properly, and incidentally mislead the Empress Dowager.
Having made up his mind, Gu Sui stroked the white cat in his arms again. The pleasant sensation softened his expression.
“Let’s give you a name. Hmm… how about Lulu?”
Gu Sui smiled, stroking the cat’s gray paws as he said,
“From now on, your name is Lulu, got it?”
“Meow~”
As if in response, Gu Sui’s smile deepened.
“So obedient. If only she were as well-behaved as you.”
*
As he approached the palace gates, Gu Sui saw the carriage with the Gu family insignia from afar. He turned to the two palace attendants behind him and said,
“After you deliver the items, you may return.”
“Yes.”
Gu Sui was casually playing with the cat in his arms when he suddenly felt a cold wind sweep past his side. He instinctively dodged.
The glint of a dagger flashed in front of him, leaving a sharp cut on his sleeve in an instant.
“Gu Sui, die!”
No one expected an assassin to suddenly rush out from a group of passing palace maids. Someone screamed, and the guards at the palace gates rushed over at the sound.
Gu Sui’s brows furrowed. To encounter such a thing even in the palace – how unlucky could he be!
The assassin swung the dagger at him again. Gu Sui retreated quickly while rapidly considering countermeasures.
It wasn’t that he couldn’t fight, but this person was clearly after his life. He probably couldn’t subdue her without getting injured.
The guards were still some distance away. Seeing the dagger coming straight for his face, Gu Sui narrowed his eyes and freed his right hand to attack the assassin’s wrist.
First, disarm her.
The assassin was prepared, her moves vicious and ruthless. Gu Sui couldn’t easily succeed and had to dodge again.
The assassin was familiar with Gu Sui’s tactics and was prepared to block after her initial attack.
But she didn’t expect Gu Sui to retreat instead of advance, which momentarily stunned her, causing her to lose the initiative.
Gu Sui seized the opportunity, stepping forward to kick at the pressure point on the assassin’s shoulder. Taking advantage of her numb arm, he quickly disarmed her.
However, in the next second, tiny poison needles shot out from the assassin’s sleeve. Gu Sui thought ‘not good’ and quickly bent backwards to avoid them.
His slender waist bent back at an alarming angle. After all, with years of Gu Sui’s internal energy backing him, his movements were much more agile than before, barely avoiding those poison needles.
The cat in his arms cried out loudly. A cold killing intent followed closely. Gu Sui’s heart sank as he hadn’t yet managed to straighten up.
“Ah–”
A long sword flew swiftly past Gu Sui’s eyes, carrying a chilling sword aura, mercilessly piercing the assassin’s chest.
The fierce force sent her flying, crashing heavily in front of the approaching guards, who quickly surrounded her.
Mu Jiulu landed from the palace wall, her entire person like she had been soaked in ice water, without any warmth.
Gu Sui, who had just escaped death, watched her walk towards the assassin lying on the ground moaning. She pulled out the long sword and pressed it against the assassin’s throat.
“Who sent you?”
The assassin’s face was full of resentment and unwillingness. Without saying a word, knowing she had no chance, she simply bit down on her poison and committed suicide.
Blood seeped from the corner of her mouth, its deep black color making Gu Sui, not far away, shudder.
What deep grudge could make someone so resolute?
Mu Jiulu’s expression grew colder. She used her sword tip to open the assassin’s collar, narrowing her eyes at the black tattoo on the collarbone.
“Dongzhou Poison Wolf.”
Gu Sui stepped forward and immediately saw the prominent wolf fang tattoo, furrowing his brow.
Mu Jiulu turned to look at Gu Sui, scanning him up and down.
“Are you alright?”
Gu Sui shook his head. Mu Jiulu then turned to look at the group of guards around them and coldly snorted.
“For such a thing to happen right at the palace gates, what use are you!”
“Please forgive us, Wang Zhu,” the lead guard spoke in a deep voice. “It was this humble servant’s oversight that allowed the Dongzhou Poison Wolf to infiltrate the palace. This humble servant will thoroughly investigate this matter and give Young General Gu an explanation.”
Mu Jiulu waved her hand coldly, and the group of guards dragged away the assassin’s corpse.
After everyone had withdrawn, Gu Sui looked at Mu Jiulu, whose brows were knitted with cold intent.
“Were you just now… concerned about me?”
Mu Jiulu’s jaw tightened, her red lips pressed together. Hearing this, she let out a scornful laugh and averted her gaze.
“Master Gu is overthinking. This king simply didn’t want a bloodbath at the palace gates.”
“Is that so? What a coincidence that you were here too?”
Mu Jiulu nodded expressionlessly. Gu Sui looked at her profile and lightly clicked his tongue.
“But your reason for saving someone is not sufficient. According to what you said before, you can’t let the Gu family’s army fall into anyone’s hands, and you don’t want to marry me. Wouldn’t my death be the best choice?”
Gu Sui asked calmly. Mu Jiulu slightly turned her eyes to glance at him.
“If you died, Gu Tingsong would go mad.”
“You don’t look like someone who’s afraid of her.”
Gu Sui said with a smile, his peach blossom eyes curving into a beautiful arc.
“You were just concerned about me.”
“Isn’t that right, Lulu?”
Gu Sui said to the frightened white cat in his arms. A dark color flashed through Mu Jiulu’s eyes.
“What did you call this king?”
‘Lu’ and ‘Lu’ were homophonous, and Mu Jiulu unconsciously thought he was calling her.
Gu Sui looked up at her with mischief, secretly laughing.
“I wasn’t calling you, I was calling it.”
Mu Jiulu looked at the innocent white cat lying in the young man’s arms, feeling a bit irritated.
“Look at its eyes, aren’t they as clear as morning dew? That’s why I named it Lulu.”
Faced with Gu Sui’s explanation, Mu Jiulu expressed that she didn’t want to hear it, she just wanted him to change the name.
“I won’t change it. It’s my cat, I’ll call it whatever I want.”
Mu Jiulu: “Did the Empress Dowager give this to you?”
Gu Sui calmly replied: “Yes.”
“Don’t you understand the implication?”
Mu Jiulu said with exasperation. A glint of success flashed in Gu Sui’s eyes.
“I do. See, this young master is still marketable. If you don’t hurry up, you might miss your chance.”
Mu Jiulu: “……”
She felt that all her composure was meaningless in front of him. He could always easily provoke her emotions, just like now.
Mu Jiulu used great effort to suppress the urge to tie him up and take him back to the Wang mansion right now. She snorted with a laugh, her tone mocking.
“Is that so? If that day really comes, Master Gu will have to call this king ‘Aunt’.”
Gu Sui: “???”
He stood there dumbfounded, not expecting their conversation to develop in this direction.
How could she raise her seniority when she couldn’t win the argument!
That’s not playing fair!
“Let’s not talk about this anymore. That assassin just now, what’s this Dongzhou Poison Wolf?”
Mu Jiulu: “You don’t know?”
Gu Sui: “Should I know?”
“What do you think, Wolf-Slaughtering General known throughout Dongzhou?”
Gu Sui: “……”
This title, was it referring to him?
“Dongzhou is located on the snow plains, with sixteen cities divided among three powers. The Poison Wolves occupy eight of them, acting viciously and insidiously, living by plunder.
Three years ago, you led an expedition to the snow plains and slaughtered the main Poison Wolf city, Wugui City, killing ten thousand people. Now there are less than a hundred Poison Wolves left alive, and every one of them hates you to the core.”
Mu Jiulu still explained a bit for him. After listening, Gu Sui remained silent.
He didn’t expect that this Gu Sui was quite brutal.
However, he didn’t feel that he had done anything wrong.
The Poison Wolves acted in ways that harmed heaven and earth. Gu Sui’s act of slaughtering the city – his only oversight was failing to eliminate them completely.
Gu Sui felt that since he now occupied his body and his relatives,
He would also inherit these grudges.
It seemed he still needed to find a way to quickly master this body’s internal energy. Otherwise, if he encountered the Poison Wolves seeking revenge in the future, it wouldn’t be easy to handle.
Mu Jiulu wouldn’t always be by his side to protect him.
“Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Mu Jiulu spoke calmly, thinking he might have been frightened, inwardly pondering how to comfort him without breaking character.
“Oh, it’s nothing. I’m just hungry. Have you eaten?”
Mu Jiulu raised an eyebrow and looked at the white cat in his hands.
“Is Yongning Palace so poor that they can’t even provide an extra lunch?”
It would be laughable if word got out.
Gu Sui pulled at the corner of his mouth: “I didn’t eat comfortably.”
He had only eaten the empty promises the Empress Dowager fed him, barely touching that meal. And he had just been in a fight, so now he was hungry.
Mu Jiulu laughed lightly, a trace of helplessness flowing through her eyes as she said to him: “Then let’s go.”

I Regained My Memory the Day Before Marrying My Arch-enemy
Here I am again, introducing another novel from my reread list! Ya!!!
The female lead is a fierce and powerful demon king. The male lead is a once-in-a-millennium celestial lord, admired by the entire cultivation world.
They are equally matched, legendary rivals who have battled for centuries.
In the final duel, the female lead is gravely injured. The male lead saves her, seals her memories, and hides her true identity. He tells her that he is her fiancé. His entire life has been flawless—except for the one thing he never expected, never controlled, and never wanted to control: falling for his greatest enemy. She is his inner demon, his obsession.
When the female lead regains her memories, she is furious at his deception.
She makes his life a living hell.
And somehow, the male lead—possibly a total masochist—doesn’t mind at all. In fact, he’s happy she’s paying attention to him.
Yep, we’re back to my favorite trope: male lead suffering. If you love this kind of story, jump into the pit with me now!!!
Intro
Dong Xia lost her memory.
Her handsome and extremely powerful fiancé Li Qing comforted her: “It’s okay if you can’t remember. I’ll always be with you.”
Everyone thought Dong Xia’s ancestors must have burned incense to get such a perfect fiancé. He was the number one person in the immortal realm, yet he remained chaste and only loved her.
…
The day before marrying her fiancé, Dong Xia finally remembered everything.
She wasn’t suffering from memory loss at all.
Her arch-enemy had made her fake her death, destroyed her cultivation, replaced her memories, and pretended to be her deeply in love fiancé.
No wonder he said, “It’s okay if you can’t remember”!
Dong Xia laughed coldly as she pulled out her long knife: Li Qing, prepare to die 🙂
*
Li Qing, as the supreme being of the immortal realm, was the people’s shining beacon.
The only unknown stain in his life was his affection for Dong Xia, the ruler of the demon realm.
In the final battle of the war between immortals and demons, the sky collapsed and the earth shattered. The ruler of the demon realm was finally slain under the sword of the supreme being of the immortal realm, and everyone in the immortal realm applauded.
The cultivation world lost a ruler of the demon realm.
And in the back mountain of Li Qing’s cave dwelling, he secretly hid away a fiancée.
