Chapter 59
Shen Yao Xing did not go to open another room, but went to Bai Sha’s room intending to make do for the night, since the two of them were going out again in the evening anyway.
Bai Sha found her young lady’s actions a bit strange. It was odd enough to squeeze into her room for no reason, but she also remained silent, then took her out of the inn as soon as it got dark. Not knowing the purpose, she could only follow obediently.
On a dark and windy night, two figures crouched on the roof tiles. Bai Sha stared at the somewhat narrow street for a while, and finally couldn’t help but turn her head curiously and ask, “Miss, what are we doing here?”
“Shh,” Shen Yao Xing made a gesture to silence her, her gaze constantly scanning various parts of the street as she lowered her voice: “You’ll know in a moment.”
In fact, she herself wasn’t entirely certain. Although she knew there was something suspicious behind this matter, if that “thing” didn’t appear tonight, there would be nothing she could do.
Bai Sha immediately fell silent, her gaze returning to the dim street.
It was almost the hour of Yin and there was still no movement. Shen Yao Xing was yawning continuously, her originally bright eyes covered with a thin layer of haze. She tilted her head, resting her cheek on the back of her hand, her focused gaze gradually blurring.
Just as she was about to fall asleep, Bai Sha beside her suddenly exclaimed in a low voice: “Miss!”
Shen Yao Xing frowned and lifted her eyelids slightly. Her muddled mind couldn’t quite grasp the situation, and she confusedly squinted at her.
“You… you look down there…” Bai Sha pointed at a spot, her face showing terror.
That horrified expression reminded her of how she felt when she saw the “zombie” last night. Shen Yao Xing’s mind jolted awake, her blurry consciousness instantly clearing. She suddenly lowered her head to look at the street.
The scene was completely identical to last night, but with a suspicious mindset, the feeling wasn’t as panicked as the previous night. A slight subtlety made Shen Yao Xing narrow her eyes.
At this moment, Bai Sha beside her was frightened out of her wits. She now fully believed the rumors in the town. Her wide-open eyes trembled, her lips quivered, and she struggled to speak: “Mi…”
Shen Yao Xing quickly covered her mouth, gesturing for her not to make a sound.
Her gaze fixed on the green-faced, fanged “zombie” jumping at a not-so-fast speed. It would stop and stand still for a moment after jumping for a while, its route following the entire small town.
Shen Yao Xing followed behind all the way, watching as “it” jumped to a small alley and suddenly stood still. Its originally stiff neck flexibly twisted to look around, then it quickly ran into the darkness.
“Miss, this…” Bai Sha was somewhat surprised at the sight. She was about to ask when she saw the young woman quickly follow, and although she felt it was a bit creepy, she still followed along.
Seeing the figure that should have been stiff and slow in movement quickly weaving through the alley, Shen Yao Xing was even more certain of her thoughts.
Sure enough, the “zombie” turned left and right into the residence of the master they had visited today.
Shen Yao Xing lightly leaped onto the roof tiles, turning back to signal Bai Sha who had followed up to be quieter. She lifted a tile to look inside.
Only to see the “zombie” with a face smeared blue-black talking familiarly with the master.
“How much longer do we have to do this?”
Pan Sheng Cai glanced at her, unhurriedly saying: “What’s the rush, are you worried about having too much silver?”
“That’s not it, I’m just afraid if this goes on too long, people will discover something’s amiss, and that would be big trouble.”
“What are you nervous about, I have this under control.”
Qian Er wiped the color off her face with a coarse cloth, asking curiously: “What do you plan to do?”
Pan Sheng Cai’s eyes narrowed craftily, “After we make a big score, we’ll leave this place.”
Qian Er considered herself not as clever as this woman, and couldn’t figure out what she wanted to do. But it didn’t matter, as long as she got her share of the silver. Once she received the money, she would never return to this wretched place.
“I’m afraid that won’t be possible for you.”
Just as the two were each making their own calculations, a voice suddenly intruded from out of nowhere. Pan Sheng Cai was startled, looking around but unable to find the source. She frowned fiercely: “Who’s there!?”
Qian Er, who had been immersed in wonderful fantasies, was also startled by this voice. Seeing no one else around besides the two of them, her heart began to tremble with fear. She stiffly moved towards the statue, swallowing hard, her eyes showing fear: “I… I’ve heard people say before that if you pretend to be ghosts and gods too much, you’re likely to encounter real ones. Could this be…”
“Shut up!” Pan Sheng Cai scolded harshly, her eyes constantly scanning the empty space. In the dead of night, she was also feeling a bit spooked.
On the roof tiles, Shen Yao Xing looked down at the two from above, feeling quite speechless.
With such little courage, they still dared to come out and swindle people.
“Miss, they…” So it was all a scam!
Shen Yao Xing didn’t plan to banter with them. She jumped down directly, looking at the two with a calm expression, ignoring the “master’s” fierce glare, her gaze falling on that face that wasn’t yet completely wiped clean of the blue-black color.
Pan Sheng Cai gritted her teeth, staring at the young woman who suddenly appeared in the room. She clenched her fists tightly, the shame of being exposed on the spot making her face flush red with anger. She wanted nothing more than to tear the person to pieces.
“You…”
Shen Yao Xing moved her gaze back to the woman, raising an eyebrow to indicate she should continue speaking.
It was precisely this subtle action that made Pan Sheng Cai feel even more humiliated. Her malicious intent grew stronger in her heart as she stared at the two with a gloomy expression, twitching her slightly purple lips: “Hell has no gate yet you insist on barging in. Don’t blame this poor Taoist for showing no mercy.”
Shen Yao Xing’s expression remained unchanged as she allowed the woman to swing her whisk towards her, her feet moving slightly to easily dodge it.
Originally thinking the woman might have some skill, Shen Yao Xing was initially somewhat interested. But who knew this person couldn’t even withstand one of her kicks? Her body crashed into the statue and she fell to the ground, unconscious.
Qian Er, seeing their trick exposed, hurriedly tried to run, but was blocked by another woman in white clothes.
