So Yan Jin swallowed back those coaxing words and brought up another topic. “You ran out so early, you probably haven’t eaten right? I saw a wonton stall when I came in, shall we go eat some?”
“Didn’t you already eat?” Yu Shu was still a bit depressed. “Just now at the doctor’s, I saw you bringing breakfast in.”
Yan Jin let out an “oh”. “I gave the breakfast to the doctor.”
“Yan Jin, how silly of you.” Yu Shu furrowed his brows. “You bought breakfast, why didn’t you eat it? Starving yourself to give it to others, I didn’t know you were so generous before.”
“Because you weren’t there.” After saying that, Yan Jin even reminded Yu Shu, “Did you forget, before when I didn’t wait for you to eat together, your lips were pursed high enough to hang an oil pot. Since then, we always eat together.”
Hearing this, the corners of Yu Shu’s lips curled up uncontrollably. “Special circumstances call for special handling. Yan Jin, how can you be so rigid and inflexible.”
“I’m rigid and inflexible?” Yan Jin faintly repeated the words Yu Shu used to describe her. “I know you too well. If I hadn’t waited for you to eat together, you little rascal, you might have cursed me out in your heart.”
“That’s slander!” Yu Shu huffed angrily, “How could I curse you out!”
Yan Jin spoke faintly, “Then would you call me a selfish jerk for eating alone?”
Yu Shu lowered his head and sheepishly twiddled his fingers. “Can’t help it.”
Yan Jin leisurely smacked Yu Shu’s head. Under his resentful but not daring to speak gaze, she drawled, “I knew you were a little rascal.”
Wen Cai at the counter watched with interest, even taking out sweet potato fries to munch on for added entertainment.
Yan Jin glanced at Wen Cai but didn’t say anything. The sharp-eyed audience also noticed Wen Cai silently spectating.
Since Yan Jin had specially come to find him, Yu Shu couldn’t well keep staying at the bookstore and not go home. After bidding Wen Cai farewell, he caught sight of Yan Jin picking up a familiar novel.
Yu Shu’s pupils constricted. He hurriedly went forward to pull on Yan Jin’s sleeve, conveniently putting the novel she had just picked up back in its original spot. “Didn’t you just say you wanted to eat wontons? Let’s go.”
Yan Jin inconspicuously glanced at the novel Yu Shu had deliberately turned over, the corners of her lips curling up. “Let’s go.”
After walking out of the bookstore, hit by the chilly morning air, Yu Shu realized how abrupt his earlier actions were. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead as he started making excuses for himself. “Sorry, I was just too hungry and in a rush to eat, so I wasn’t paying attention and put back the novel you wanted to buy.”
If he changed the subject, Yan Jin would definitely notice something was off. But if he openly brought up putting the novel back just now, Yan Jin definitely wouldn’t find anything amiss.
The mirth in Yan Jin’s eyes deepened.
Sure enough, just as she expected, when Yu Shu felt guilty, he didn’t avoid talking about his strange behavior, but directly laid the matter out in the open under her eyes.
“I was originally going to buy it, but I don’t like that author’s name.” Yan Jin said slowly, “Peach Wine, with one look you can tell it’s the incoherent ramblings of some good-for-nothing drunkard who only knows to while away time by drinking, with no readability.”
Yu Shu: “…You’re judging a book by its cover, maybe they write quite well.”
“You’re still young,” Yan Jin held back a laugh, “and don’t understand how much sense my words make.”
Yu Shu was dissatisfied in his heart but didn’t dare vent directly, so he could only silently puff himself up like a blowfish.
Yu Shu’s dissatisfaction only lasted no more than ten minutes.
When the two arrived at the wonton stall Yan Jin mentioned, as soon as the two bowls of wontons were served, seeing the plump little white wontons floating in the bowl, smelling their rich fragrance permeating the air, Yu Shu couldn’t help but feel his appetite stirring.
The wonton skins were thin and the filling ample. The meat inside was so fresh that one bite filled the mouth with delicious aroma.
Yu Shu had gotten drunk last night and hadn’t had a drop of water since waking up in the morning. With one bite of the wonton, the nerve in his body called “hunger” was awakened. It even made Yu Shu’s stomach growl.
Yu Shu covered his stomach, sneaking an embarrassed glance at Yan Jin, only to find her eating wontons without even raising her head. For a moment, his feelings were complex. He couldn’t say if he was happy Yan Jin didn’t notice his embarrassing state or disappointed that Yan Jin’s attention wasn’t on him.
Yan Jin indeed hadn’t heard Yu Shu’s stomach growling, her hearing wasn’t that good after all.
Noticing Yu Shu’s gaze falling on her, Yan Jin hesitated for a bit before shielding her bowl. “I’ve already eaten from this bowl. If you still want to eat, I can order another bowl for you.”
